Boundaries

This pair of sculptures is inspired by the shapes of cheese plant leaves, and they create an interesting contrast with the greenery of Thorpe Meadows. The sculptures were created by British artist Veronica Ryan. Boundaries were stolen from Thorpe Meadow Sculpture Park on 3rd January 2012. “It is a striking sculpture, very substantial, and thieves would have needed transportation to carry it away,” said PC Craig Farrington1.

About Veronica Ryan
Veronica Maudlyn Ryan studied at St. Albans College (1974-75), Bath Academy of Art (1975-78), the Slade School of Art (1978-80), and the School for Oriental and African Studies (1981-83), and her work has been shown in solo exhibits at the ICA in London and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge. Ryan was born in Plymouth, Montserrat, in 1956 and her family immigrated to the United Kingdom when she was as a toddler. Her upbringing was spent in London and Hertfordshire, with a brief visit to the Caribbean when she was ten years old2. She now lives between Hertfordshire, UK and New York.

Ryan completed a residency at Tate St Ives in 2000, where she worked in Barbara Hepworth’s former studio and used marble donated by the Hepworth Estate. Throughout her career, Veronica has worked with issues of history, dislocation, and belonging3.

The Arts Council Collection, Sainsbury’s Collection, Tate Collection, Contemporary Art Society, The Hepworth Wakefield, and the Weltkunst Collection at the Irish Museum of Modern Art are among the public collections that hold her work3. More about Veronica and her work can be found on this site.
