Creature

The sculpture Creature is located on the Peterborough Sculpture Trail, Thorpe Meadows Sculpture Park PE3 6LN. It was reportedly known as Solid Water once1. When and why the name was changed to Creature are unknown. A giant block of clipsham stone was used to chisel this abstract artwork by Anne Nicholson.

The origin of clipsham stone is unclear. It is commonly believed that clipsham stone, a solite limestone from Lincolnshire, is one of, if not the country’s hardest Jurassic limestone. It is described as being coarse and shelly. The colour ranges from brown to light cream, as well as light grey and sometimes blue. To create this sculptural form, the artist used a combination of hand carving and mechanised sawing. The artwork indicates many shapes and forms when viewed from various perspectives2.

Nicholson notable for carved work, born in London, who studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts between 1974–19793.
