Quarry

The Quarry carved in 1981 by Simon Perry. Quarry is a wolf-like creature emerging from a stone block. The material and figure are related to the landscape’s heritage, with wolves roaming the British countryside until the 15th century. The use of limestone reflects the space’s history as a quarry, providing building materials for the city’s road and town network. According to legend, the wolf now guards Thorpe Meadows, a recreational area constructed for Peterborough residents. The Quarry is depicted in numerous perspectives below.

Simon Perry is a sculptor and professor from the United Kingdom who now lives in Melbourne, Australia. Perry’s approach involves a variety of sculptural processes, including casting, carving, and fabrication, and is best known for his large-scale public art works for urban settings in Australia and abroad. Bronze, concrete, granite, steel, aluminium, wood, and stone have all been used in his works. Perry’s commissioned works are mostly site-specific and often use light humour to address environmental and public space issues.
