Under the Ocean, Under the Sea

CHRISTINE ANGUS
Under the Ocean, Under the Sea
Under the Ocean, Under the Sea made from Portland Stone and measure H 115 x W 178 x D 79 cm. The three pieces that appear to be building fragments resemble the stone ruins of a sunk civilisation. It was purchased by Peterborough Development Corporation in 1984.
The sculpture is in keeping with the city’s long history, which includes remnants of Iron Age and Roman sites nearby. The sculptures also provide a link to the adjacent River Nene, which has served as a source of food, ritual, and transportation for people throughout history, and which now serves as a recreational and leisure area while also acting as a floodplain that protects the city from flooding1.
Sculptor Christine Angus was born in the Lincolnshire town of Grimsby. She went to Brighton Polytechnic to study sculpting from 1974 to 1978. She has been self-employed since 1979, participating in a number of group shows2.
