People

Tolleck Winner said, “The abstract form of my sculpture came from the ripples in the water a reflection of a young couple walking hand in hand along a river front on a sunny windy day”.

People created in 2009 with oxidised steel. The sculpture reflects the movement around it  – with walkers enjoying gentle strolls as well busy commuters moving through the space. The artist enjoys using raw materials to create his work. The ‘People’ created from steel, It is designed to change as the elements effect it, oxidising and changing colour.

People’ A Poem
People.
People are strange.
People change.
People stand.
People talk.
Dance, dream, walk.
People excite
Deight;
New ideas, new words,
Ways, moods

People.
People gaze,
Are amazed.
Are smart.
Make art.
Make sculpture.
Dream dreams.
Make plans
Hold meetings hold hands
Make wars

Are tiresome bores.

People like you.
People like me.

A poem sent to Winner by Peterborough Sculpture Trust. It was sent by an anonymous poet that was written a few months after the installation of the sculpture. The poet wrote, “As you walk around this piece of sculpture, the forms of the two pieces of metal change. At first separate, they then seem to merge together, then move apart again. The two forms change according to where you are standing, or from your particular vantage point at any given time. So it is with people and relationships in real life; there is always movement and constant change. I have used this idea as a stimulus for this poem”.1
